Learn to Row Lead Coach

The George Pocock Rowing Foundation is seeking Learn to Row coaches for the Spring Season for its 7-12th grade Pocock Youth Rowing Program.

Position type: Hourly, Part-time

Pay range: $26-$29/hour

Dates:   March 3, 2026 - April 23, 2026

Hours:    Tuesday, Thursdays 4:15-6:45pm Saturday 8:45-11:15am

Location:  Pocock Rowing Center, Seattle, WA

PYR seeks to model an intentionally welcoming, positive Learn to Row experience for first-time youth athletes. We believe that this experience is foundational to increasing access and belonging for both the sport and our team.  

The LTR coach is responsible for the direction, instruction, and safety supervision of the Learn to Row athletes. The LTR coach fosters an active learning environment where athletes can try without fear of failure and support one another’s unique identities, learning and successes. 

This position is ideal for candidates who want to have a big impact by creating an inspirational first experience with rowing that provides athletes with a sense of belonging in the boathouse, excitement for future rowing opportunities, and foundational skills necessary for the next step. 

This candidate believes in rowing as a tool for building life skills, creating access to opportunity and learning through sport, has prior coaching/novice coaching experience, enjoys working with young learn-to-row athletes, and is invested in helping make rowing more accessible and inclusive for people of color and those facing socio-economic barriers to participation.

This person is expected to serve in a leadership role on the staff.  The LTR coach must be an enthusiastic team player who can balance managing the daily operations of their own practice while working collaboratively with other coaches. They are comfortable working in an energetic, dynamic environment that requires flexibility and problem solving with colleagues to ensure appropriate management of equipment and space use for each squad. 

The right candidate will be skilled in organization and time management, and bring a fun, energetic, confident, and inclusive leadership style to PYR.  They will also seek opportunities for professional learning and growth through trainings, peer and supervisor feedback and athlete or parent surveys.

Specific Role Responsibilities: Learn to Row Lead coach

  • Execute the PYR Learn to Row curriculum, including icebreakers, land instruction and on-water rowing. 

  • Instructs, demonstrates, and reinforces beginning rowing skill sets and safety procedures both on and off the water. This is conducted primarily in sculling boats.

  • Develop athletes within the context of the youth program’s long-term athlete development model.

  • Help connect athletes with opportunities to continue rowing at PYR and scholarship opportunities at the GPRF.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage session logistics of equipment and space to ensure a smoothly run and consistent Learn to Row experience for all involved.

  • Support the Program Registrar in collection of required registration forms and athlete participation surveys.  Document attendance and communicate irregularities to the Program Registrar.

  • Support the Head Coach and Program Registrar’s team communications to athletes and parents regarding schedules and general questions.

  • Respond to in-person or electronic communications about specific athlete needs.

  • Capture opportunities to welcome parents and families to the PYR program.  

  • Abide by policies laid out in the Pocock Youth Rowing Coaching Manual, GPRF Operations Manual, GPRF Athlete Protection Policy and GPRF Employee Guide 

  • Attend team practices and staff meetings as scheduled with the supervisor.

  • Communicate with your team, fellow staff, and supervisor on a regular basis about items relating to safety, athlete development, facility and equipment use and other pertinent topics. 

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Ensures a safe environment for all athletes and staff, and adheres to safety policies of the Pocock Rowing Center. 

  • Cultivate a culture of belonging for all PYR athletes, parents and staff.

  • Enforce team standards for maintaining the cleanliness of the facility and condition of the equipment. 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in competitive rowing at the youth or collegiate level

  • Experience with training and/or coaching sculling 

  • Preferably previous coaching experience, ideally with youth athletes

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with youth and adults

  • Excellent time management skills 

  • Candidates must satisfactorily complete a background check 

  • USRowing Level 1 or Level 2 certification

  • WA State Boaters License
