Our Programs

Rowing for the Pocock Youth Rowing program is a transformative experience for the student athlete.  Students learn life skills through teamwork, competition, skill development and fitness building.  Pocock athletes have continued rowing at over 35 colleges, including the University of Washington.  Some have represented the US in international competition. You can learn more about our approach to youth rowing on our ‘About PYR’ page.

High School Programs

There are several levels of programming offered for high school athletes. All practices run after school during the fall, winter and spring, with Saturday morning practices. Summer practices run on weekday mornings in July and August. During the school year, athletes may choose between the Green Squad (up to 5 sessions/week) and the Gold Squad (6 sessions/week). Participants must have prior rowing experience to be eligible for these squads. Learn more about our Green & Gold Program below.

Middle School Programs

Our middle school programs are open to 7th and 8th graders and run after school during the academic year and on weekday mornings in July and August. In the Fall and Spring seasons, athletes have the option of participating in either the Middle School Green Squad (2 sessions/week) or the Middle School Gold Squad (3 sessions/week). Participants must have completed a Learn to Row program to be eligible for these squads. Learn more about our Green & Gold Program below.

Learn to Row practices run after school during the fall, winter and spring, summer camps run in the mornings. Learn to Row classes teach participants safety on the waterway, boat handling, rowing language, and the mechanics of the rowing stroke. All brand new athletes must take a LTR class before joining the Middle or High School teams.

Learn to Row Programs

Camp Lucy is a FREE 10-day learn-to-row camp for girls, inclusive of non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming youth, that uses rowing as a way to learn social-emotional skills and life skills.

Camp Lucy uses fitness and team-building activities to help campers learn about themselves as individuals and as part of a greater team. As Camp Lucy participants learn to try new things, they will gain an "I Can Do That!" mentality, and recognize the many ways that they are strong, powerful, supported, and brave!

Private Lessons

Learn to row and visiting youth athletes can take up to 3 lessons before joining a youth program.

PYR does not offer private lessons to youth athletes currently enrolled in Pocock Youth programs.

This policy is in place to encourage youth athletes to take full advantage of instruction during scheduled practices and utilize a healthy recovery schedule. The policy also avoids the appearance of conflicts of interest inherent in paying program coaches outside of normal instructional hours.
